RV Ownership: Common Mistakes

Owning an RV is an exciting adventure, but it’s impossible to know everything you need to from Day One. It’s a learning process, which inevitably involves making mistakes along the way.

While you can’t prevent every possible mistake, you can learn from the common mistakes made by other RV owners and skip making those ones.

When Buying an RV

A lack of research can result in buying the wrong RV for your needs. If you have the wrong recreational vehicle, you’re limited in the types of trips that you take. Take your time and visit the best RV dealers to determine what’s available. Read reviews and test drive different RVs to ensure you purchase something that accommodates the types of trips you want to take in the future.

When Traveling with an RV

If you own a towable RV, it can be easy to fall into your usual habits when driving your vehicle…and forget to account for the new turning radius and new stopping distance that happens when your camper is connected to the vehicle. Make sure you dedicate enough time practicing driving your car with your RV attached to help build that muscle memory.

If you own a motorhome, it can be tempting to hit the road before you are ready. But it’s important to spend plenty of time getting yourself acquainted with this new vehicle. Be sure you fully understand everything from its turning radius to how long it takes to bring the vehicle to a full stop. Just like with a towable RV, it’s important to practice driving around to build that comfort level before going on a vacation.

When Maintaining an RV

The freezer in your RV is a lot different than the one in your home. It needs to be defrosted regularly to prevent too much ice from accumulating inside. Fortunately, it’s fairly simple to defrost the appliance by unplugging it and allowing everything to melt and drain out.
